American Ricky Wells was the hero for Workington as he defeated the previously unbeaten Lewis Kerr of Newcastle in a run-off for the Ian Thomas Shield after both legs had finished all square after the 30 heats over the two days of racing.

Wells was confident of doing a job in the race off and duly gated to head the race from start to finish and was happy afterwards by adding: "I was ready to win the race and knew at that stage of the meeting if I made the first corner in front Lewis wouldn't catch me as the racing line was on the inside and thabkfully it worked a treat and we came away happy and the fans got something to cheer about.

"Overall my night went ok if not spectacular and we struggled with set-ups as a team and Newcastle just out rode us like we did to them at Workington on Saturday but it was a challenge meeting where we can learn from the mistakes we made as a team."

Wells now heads to Wolverhampton on Tuesday night where the Wolves entertain Belle Vue in an Elite league fixture.
